120 Series

The 120i250LA is a 1/4" 3-flute ball nose from the 120 Series, for contoured surfaces and cavities in steel, iron, titanium and nickel alloys. The L in the part number means a longer cut: 0.750" length of cut (3x diameter), for deeper cavities and taller walls.

On contoured surfaces and radial features, the ball leaves a small scallop you size with your stepover, where a flat end mill leaves steps.
At the same feed rate and spindle speed, three flutes take a thinner chip per edge than a 2-flute ball, which matters in hard materials, where chip load per tooth decides edge life.
The ball radius is 0.125", and Sonic grinds its profile to a lineform accuracy of 0.0002".
The end is center cutting, and Sonic shapes the center to reduce marking on the part.
The TiAlSiN coating is built for heat: it holds up to 1000°C and its low-friction surface cuts down wear.
